Alpha Lipoic Acid - the Super Anti-Oxidant

You may have heard of alpha lipoic acid as the super anti-oxidant. Much research has now been conducted on the effectiveness of alpha lipoic acid as an anti-oxidant with evidence it is 400 x more potent than Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Found in spinach, alpha lipoic acid was first discovered to be a powerful anti-oxidant in supplement form. Used extensively in the USA with excellent results it was tested topically with equally impressive results particularly in reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

So what makes alpha lipoic acid so special?
It is unique in that it is soluble in both water and oil which allows it to enter all parts of the cell. Because of this it provides the greatest protection against damaging free radicals when compared with other anti-oxidants. It has been found to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, give skin a healthy glow and boost levels of other anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C thus also increasing their effectiveness. At a cellular level, it inhibits cross-linking, which is the formation of chemical bridges between proteins or other large molecules. This contributes to the aging process by causing hardening of the arteries, wrinkling of the skin and stiffening of the joints.
